ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how cosplayers with male genitalia work within social norms of gender and appearance to balance the risks and rewards of displaying their anatomy in superhero cosplay. The chapter will approach the topic from the perceptions and practices of cosplayers themselves and from the perspective of the viewer in order to interrogate the social limits for the display of male genitalia defined by the cosplay community in the United States. Through analysis of both structured, in-person interviews and published media, this chapter will look at how ethical frameworks limit the subversive creativity of entrepreneurial activity in cosplay.
