ABSTRACT

What topics might be included in a volume of essays on Anglophone eighteenth-century literary and cultural studies that addresses the intellectual and ideological needs of our time? This is the primary question the editors of the Routledge Companion to Eighteenth-Century Literatures in English asked when we were invited by Routledge to assemble essays that would function as introductions to the many subfields that define our scholarly activities today, as well as provide substantive analyses of achievements and shortfalls in each subfield.
