ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the transnational connections and ideological growth of key Uruguayan student organizations from 1908 through the mid-1950s. Over several decades, student activists in Uruguay forged transnational connections with their peers in a variety of ways including hosting and attending international conferences, advocating for university reform, speaking out on domestic and global issues, and standing in solidarity with student struggles around the world. These transnational student connections developed alongside the growth of a robust anti-imperialist and anti-dictatorship platform that reinforced their commitment to fighting for a more just world. By mapping the transnational activism and ideological positions of key Uruguayan university student organizations in the first half of the twentieth century, this chapter offers important insight into the activities of successive generations of Uruguayan students and highlights the long history of transnational student networks that pre-date the more widely celebrated student movements of the 1960s.
