ABSTRACT

In Australia, the language of student engagement and partnership is now prevalent in institutional strategic visions, reflecting the view of students as ‘key stakeholders’ in their education. However, in the sector, there is variation in the understanding of, and approaches to, student partnership, student governance and student representation. Across a diversity of settings there is an emerging body of research and practice to inform understandings of what authentic student engagement looks like in Australian higher education. In this chapter we will discuss recent developments in student engagement in the sector and key drivers for these developments. We set the context, highlight key challenges to inclusive practice and discuss emerging trends that may signal the future of diverse student engagement and partnership in an increasingly disrupted higher education landscape.
