ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the hidden impact that extra-curricular activity can play within student engagement. A critical review of the relationship between extra-curricular activity and key student engagement concepts will suggest that extra-curricular activity operates on the fringes of student engagement research and discourse. Examination of the relationship between extra-curricular activity, student success and learning analytics will further this argument. Analysis of the often hidden impact of extra-curricular activity on individual students’ experiences will provide support for student engagement theory to further investigate engagement beyond the classroom through the recognition and development of extra-curricular activity. The chapter will conclude by outlining recommendations and areas for future development, which will seek to establish extra-curricular activity as a key driver of student engagement and student success practice.
