ABSTRACT

This chapter is a summary of the new data produced by the joint efforts of the Soprintendenza and the University of Salerno for the study and conservation of the archaeological remains of Benevento (ancient Beneventum) and its territory. Not only has our understanding of Beneventum’s urban development changed, but also new data point to a reworking of the settlement history and system of land divisions within the city’s territory, indicating important elements of continuity from the pre-Roman Samnite phase into the Republican period, particularly at the site of Masseria Grasso, identified with ancient Nuceriola.
