ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an update on urban planning at Pompeii between the Archaic period and the first century BCE, based on new data from the most recent archaeological investigations. The chapter focuses on the continuity of the urban layout between the Archaic and the Samnite periods and on the relationship between urban planning and the geomorphology of Pompeii. Another aspect analyzed is the organization of the road system connected with the city walls and the progressive occupation of the rampart walk by domestic structures. Lastly, attention is given to the new housing models that have emerged from recent studies, which are contemporaneous with the Tuscan atrium house.
