ABSTRACT
Roman intervention in Sicily was a momentous step in the expansion of its imperium and has been considered since antiquity a crucial development in Roman imperialism. The scope and objectives of the conflict, when the Roman ruling class decided to instigate it, and to what degree those objectives may have changed, have been a matter of passionate debate for ancient and modern practitioners of Roman history.
