ABSTRACT

This chapter, by Andrea Merrett, presents a history of the Women’s School of Planning and Architecture. Although short-lived, founded in 1974, and canceled before its planned fifth year in 1980, the WSPA modeled a progressive and experimental architecture education, addressing topics and student needs ignored by mainstream institutions. The topics and issues addressed by the WSPA concerning the role of women in architecture were well ahead of their time.As Merrett argues, the school still has something to teach decades after it closed.
