ABSTRACT

This chapter, by Andreea Mihalache, focuses on the ideas of the iconic theorist and practitioner Denise Scott Brown as she transitioned from student to educator in the early 1960s. Illustrated by little-known letters and writings, Mihalache’s essay shows how Scott Brown distinguished herself as a thinker from her professors and mentors, including her partner, Robert Venturi. Although more than a half-century has passed since Scott Brown wrote the letters and texts quoted here, her approach remains fresh and relevant in an architectural culture that continues to struggle with problems of inclusivity and questions of judgment.
