ABSTRACT

Discussion of the dialogue between architecture and Cubism is generally dominated by the work of Le Corbusier. However, Vesely shows that the interpretation of the implications of Cubism in Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century displayed considerable variation, depending upon the predilections of the interpreters and their cultural circumstances. Czech painters, sculptors and architects were enthusiastic participants in this speculation, in both their works and their writings. Drawing upon original sources, Vesely relates the topics important for Czech artists and theorists of the early twentieth century and then treats the architectural interpretation of these themes.
