ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to illustrate that the combination of political finance regulations, the plurality/majoritarian electoral systems, and the sophisticated patronage politics in Mongolia has given the incumbent party significant advantages. These factors are the main drivers behind the Mongolian People's Party's (MPP's) successful shaping of the current party system. First, the chapter provides an overview of Mongolia's historical parliamentary elections and the evolution of the political party landscape since the democratic revolution of 1990 up to 2022. Secondly, we will illustrate how regulations concerning political parties and finances have contributed to the dominance of a single party. Thirdly, the chapter explores the influence of evolving electoral systems in Mongolia over the past 30 years, emphasizing their role in solidifying one party dominance.
