ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter serves to set the scene for the discourses of the book. We highlight the significance of scholarly publication in high-impact English-medium journals and in the knowledge economy more broadly and emphasize the implications that scholarly publication has in the lives and careers of novice scholars and early-career researchers. We provide a schematic picture of the complicated and multifaceted nature of knowledge production and dissemination in the current knowledge economy, highlighting the literacies and requirements needed for participating in such an elite practice. Against this background, the chapter draws attention to the significance of mentorship and the key role of academic institutions and different stakeholders (supervisors, mentors, practitioners) in scaffolding the socialization process of novice scholars into participating in and contributing to global knowledge economy. The chapter concludes with a synopses of individual chapters.
