ABSTRACT

Prison education programs are one avenue toward upward mobility and success for those who have experienced incarceration in the United States. This chapter provides a brief history and description of postsecondary prison education programs, details the policies associated with mass incarceration that simultaneously impact postsecondary education programs in prison, and highlights research on prison education programs. Additionally, with the FAFSA Simplification Act signed into legislation in December 2020, this chapter discusses the benefits and drawbacks associated with these programs at a time when this topic has moved to the forefront of the discussion throughout the field.
