ABSTRACT

The U.S. continues to incarcerate youth at alarming rates, with continued disparities for youth-of-color. For many girls, incarceration is a result of non-violent behaviors in response to abuse and neglect. This chapter focuses on the experiences of a psychologist within one state’s only juvenile correctional facility coupled with later observations as an academic conducting research at the same facility. The chapter outlines one state’s massive juvenile justice reform bill efforts, progress, and continued areas for best practices surrounding the juvenile justice system.
