ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses strategies designed to increase digital learning opportunities in urban high-needs social studies classrooms. To date, the literature has included little analysis to assist teachers in these learning communities to develop and identify digital resources to incorporate in face-to-face and online learning. To fill this gap, the chapter explores challenges and obstacles urban schools face compared to those in rural and suburban settings related to technology use, financial support, and teacher training. Strategies of implementation are included to ensure equitable and high-quality educational opportunities that reflect the diversity of urban social studies learners. In the final section, the chapter examines specific technologies social studies teachers can implement in the classroom along with suggestions for how to create a digital learning plan.
