ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how teachers created virtual classrooms using Google Suite and Bitmoji during the COVID-19 pandemic to help transition K-12 students to the virtual classroom environment. Drawing upon the parallels that exist between physical and virtual classrooms, teachers found many benefits of using virtual classrooms for literacy instruction, including classroom libraries, digital binders/notebooks, wall displays, classroom management, use of manipulatives, and classroom discussions. Furthermore, the extension of the traditional learning experience into virtual classroom spaces can offer K-12 students a more personalized and engaging learning experience that helps foster a love of learning. The lessons learned during COVID-19 to support remote literacy instruction in high-needs schools using Google Suite and Bitmoji are shared. The lessons that are shared—from creating virtual classrooms to employing specific digital learning tools—seek to educate and empower K-12 teachers in all schools.
