ABSTRACT

Virtual field trips have grown in popularity over the past two decades, both in the classroom and during remote learning. This digital learning experience is typically available at no cost, without the need for permission slips, and thousands of excursions focusing on scientific discovery can be found on the internet. Learning through exploration has tremendous benefits, and going on trips virtually or in real time through technology, regardless of platform, can provide a deeper connection to science content. As educators conduct scientific experiments with their students, digital excursions can serve as a portal to the past or a connection to current research. The catalog of virtual learning adventures expands daily, allowing children from various backgrounds and circumstances to observe science-related phenomena. This chapter reveals the perceptions of educators and learners as they explore the wonders of science around our world and provides examples of learning in specific areas such as the complexities of real-time medical triage, engineering, life sciences, and solving environmental problems in their urban school communities, all through a digital lens.
