ABSTRACT

It is often debated that businesses have a responsibility and an obligation to society. The notion that is often carried is that a responsible business is essentially one that benefits society and addresses negative impacts it might have on society, people, and the environment. Discussions over responsible behaviours and obligations have since beclouded many businesses, since both concepts emerged as formidable points from which businesses can thrive in society. Judging from the fact that responsibility is the state of being responsible, accountable, or answerable and an obligation is simply a mandate to do something, the question often arises as to how these two concepts can be fulfilled within the business context. The chapter seeks to examine these concepts and their application to business. It explores whether responsibilities are more intrinsic, as opposed to obligations, and further questions whether businesses have a responsibility or an obligation to society or both.
