ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of social responsibility in socially stigmatized occupations. The subject of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained much attention and support worldwide. However, there is little research on the role it has in stigmatized occupations. Drawing from empirical interviews and case studies, this research reveals how social responsibility practices through leadership can be exercised in the stigmatized occupation of a “special industry” in Taiwan to advance sustainable development goals (SDGs). Specifically, responsible leadership can help mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stigmatized workers as they encounter profound contested identities. This chapter offers implications for research on stigma, social responsibility, and sustainable development.
