Reflections on Postmemory – With Some Notes from Ireland and Greece

In this essay, by reference to traumatic periods in the history of Ireland and Greece, I suggest that local folk memories of the trauma, transmitted in the first instance orally, can become transformed into literary narratives in novels, plays, and memoirs which continue to embody and represent the memories of trauma as part of a national or ethnic narrative.
