ABSTRACT

The chapter reviews the findings of a study of a new Israeli program, “Creating Memory”, which includes creative work in bibliotherapeutic methodology, bringing together texts that constitute evidence from the Holocaust and creative writing by young third and fourth generation.

The study found three main themes that reflect the way young people encounter the memory of the Holocaust: Entanglement, Disconnection, and Connecting through gazes. The images and metaphors in the texts were mostly of traumatic nature. It appears that the engagement of the young participators in the “Creating Memory” program is through observation, intrinsic connection, and creativity manifested in writing. In this manner, they are transformed from silent witnesses of a single story, into active participants, reviving through writing, the past and make it part of their own story.
