ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe how educators implement effective social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) support within a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework to meet the needs of all learners. First, we describe how to implement and differentiate universal SEB practices to support each and every learner within a classroom. Second, we move beyond the universal foundation to discuss how to (a) differentiate support within Tier 1 to increase the power of universal prevention and identify students who need additional support, (b) target SEB support within Tier 2 and identify students who require more intensive intervention, and (c) use team-based comprehensive assessment, including functional behavioral assessment (FBA), to develop and implement individualized intensive SEB supports documented on a positive behavior support plan (BSP). Finally, we conclude with a discussion of issues, trends, and future directions for research and practice.
