ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the culturally relevant pedagogy and practices of communal learning within The Annex using Opportunity Structures for Belonging (i.e., institutional, instructional, and interpersonal) as a conceptual framework; the authors highlight teachers’ use of communal learning in the design of the physical space, instructional content, and social experiences. Since culture is learned, transmitted, and regulated by political, legal, and social systems, teachers play a significant role in developing students’ sense of belonging—their personal acceptance, inclusion, and support in the social environments of their classrooms. These practices fostered students’ academic and social engagement during the academic school year and beyond. Beyond the practices used in The Annex, recommendations are provided for helping students critically analyze their learning environment while facilitating their sense of belonging through cultural exchanges.
