ABSTRACT

The lack of freedom to relocate constitutes an obstacle to upward mobility and often a source of frustration to the career-minded to the extent that it restricts the individual from pursuing every available opportunity to develop a career. The career opportunity may appear in the form of an unusually exciting challenge, new responsibilities with promising career prospects, a higher pay, higher status job, or simply a good professional education. A brief description of the commuting lifestyle at this point would help in understanding the following discussion of its pros and cons. The typical commuting pattern is characterized by compartmentalization of work and home lives. Commuting creates a range of actual and potential problems - financial, emotional, logistical and personal. The nature and significance of the problems vary with family and career stages as well as with the particular situation of a commuting couple.
