ABSTRACT

Although famous for his literary contributions, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also dedicated much attention to scientific inquires and provided influential contributions to a variety of scientific fields. Goethe’s approach to science is unique as he employs artistic expressions and personal musings in his investigations and experiments. This essay explores the personal aspects, social processes, and cognitive functioning implicated in Goethe’s scientific approach. By exploring these dimensions Goethe’s scientific approach is described as a multilayered interpersonal and intrapersonal activity that reflects his personal disposition, cultural influences, philosophical commitments, occupational opportunities, and processes of reasoning.
