ABSTRACT

This chapter counts on the author’s body of work relating to the concept of rule of law. Based on his experience as the longest-sitting judge of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in handing down a series of constitutional decisions with direct bearing on, among others, the principles of rule of law, democracy, and equality, the author analyses the principle of law within the Bangladeshi constitutional scheme. The chapter does not necessarily adopt a fifty-year historical perspective, but some elements of judicial history pertaining to the rule of law over that period may contextually figure at relevant places. It will help the reader develop their own insights into the challenges of rule of law in Bangladesh.
