ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an overview of the theoretical foundations of experiential learning and Applied Behavioural Science. A brief history of the origins and development of T-Group at the NTL (National Training Laboratories) Institute, USA and at ISABS in India are presented. The chapter then traces the meaning of the term Applied Behavioural Science and describes the different methodologies that are covered by it. The progressive, humanistic, and radical theoretical traditions that are implicit in various ABS methods are described with examples. T-Group methodology is presented as a part of this wider canvas and the influence of humanistic and radical traditions is discussed.

The key elements of the T-Group methodology such as being in the moment and expression of feelings are described. The core strengths that a person gains by taking up T-Group facilitation are also identified. These include emotional maturity, diversity, competency in process facilitation and working with what is emerging. Moreover, it builds a commitment to practice T-Group values such as authenticity and using of self as an instrument of change. Further, facilitators become committed to upholding professional ethics.
