ABSTRACT

One of the most distinctive aspects of being human is that we are social. We are each affected by the presence of other people. We form relationships with others, join groups and behave differently with members of our own group as compared to others. In the previous chapters, the focus was on how we learn, develop and grow and deepen our understanding of self through intrapersonal processes like reflection and contemplation. In this chapter, we move on to learning about the self through the interpersonal interactions in a T-Group setting. We start by exploring what we mean by a psychological process and how we are affected by processes in a group. We then look at different interpersonal processes in a group when people interact with one another. The focus is on communication patterns, styles and dimensions, influence, trust and attraction and the orientation towards others in our interactions and relationships. We explore how we are influenced by, and how we influence, other people and the resultant dynamics. Models and concepts are offered to help us understand how people form close relationships or stay apart from one another.
