ABSTRACT

The greatest contribution of the Lingayat religion to society is that “all human beings are born equal”. Basavanna believed in castelessness and his teachings had the potential for annihilation of caste system. One of his Vachanas says “There is none inferior to me”. Basavanna carried out the revolutionary act of performing the marriage of the daughter of Madhuvarasa, a Brahmin, with the son of Haralaiah, a cobbler. His resolute aim was that inter caste marriage between the ‘higher’ and the ‘lower’ could only bring about change. He also insisted on Dasoha the term used for inter-caste dining.
