ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship between employability and higher education. By providing an overview of the state of higher education in the country, this chapter reveals the United Arab Emirates as a unique and interesting higher education landscape, given that Emirati nationals are a minority compared to expatriate students, as warranted by the country's demography. The chapter, therefore, hypothesises that this unique landscape, and pronounced diversity in the system that the country operates in, combined with national policies aiming to develop skills and training through higher education for an overall country-wide advancement, impact employability rates and add dimensions to it that are rarely found in other national cases. This chapter analyses national policies and strategies for integrating skill training in education vis-à-vis the current reality and state of higher education in the country and offers case-specific recommendations.
