ABSTRACT

In the spring of 2020, costume designers, technicians, and educators from across the country gathered online for the first official conference for the American Theatrical Costume Association. The brainchild of Chloe Chapin and Christianne Myers, this event began with two goals: Connecting professionals across the country and addressing critical, contemporary topics of interest across the field. There have been quiet discussion and admiration for those who changed their courses; however, many of us hesitated to make substantial change for a few reasons. While several contributors took advantage of the last few years’ disruption to take drastic steps in their teaching approaches, several others have been doggedly pursuing this project for years. By refocusing the students’ work on finding and developing knowledge instead of simply receiving knowledge, the role of the professor is that of facilitator.
