ABSTRACT

Following the research of Dr. Pravina Shukla, associate professor of folklore and ethnomusicology at Indiana University Bloomington, students explore how the mobility of people, ideas, and practices across a variety of borders reflects on the choice of dress as a social experience under globalization. Central components of the class include interaction with artists and community members and exploring different social expressions. Students get to distinguish between characterizations, mischaracterizations, and characterization. When participants learn about ancient guilds and heritage (global stories), festive spirit and human geography, reenactment and living history, and costume play and culture, they can get a context-specific understanding of dress codes from around the globe and the USA.
