ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the role of British law in relation to sexual intimacy, relationships and reproduction for disabled young adults living with life-shortening conditions. Maddie Blackburn interviews David Ruebain, an internationally recognised expert in equality, diversity and inclusion and disability law, policy and practice, and asks him: ‘Is British law a help or a hindrance?’ The interview reflects on the nature and importance of inclusion before considering its legal history, parameters, impact, strengths and weaknesses. The chapter considers other wide-ranging issues, including the impact of neoliberalist thought on understandings of intimate relationships, the concepts of interdependence and intersectionality, and the role of the arts in transformative change. David concludes with some thoughts from his personal experience, including as a disabled person.
