ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on an interview with the Handbook’s editors, exploring the author’s contribution to research on gender, sexuality and postcolonial thought. It discusses the background to several major books, specifically Making the Difference, Gender and Power, Masculinities, Southern Theory and The Good University, as well as the overall trajectory of Raewyn Connell’s work from the 1970s to the present. Major themes are the changing political and institutional conditions for social-science research, the importance of the global economy of knowledge, and the practical building of research agendas over time.
