ABSTRACT

One definition of technology is the “practical application of knowledge, especially in a particular area.” As the title of the present collection informs, that area of focus is second language writing. When the word “technology” is used these days in relation to composing, one often associates it with computers and digital means to assist writing. And in the case of the present volume, that association would be correct. However, the first part of this Introduction takes a detour back in time to describe the technological changes our species devised over the eons that have led to our present ability to make meaning from symbols appearing on screens.

In the second part of the chapter, the ten contributions are introduced followed by some brief speculations about where the latest writing technology may be heading.
