ABSTRACT

This chapter scrutinizes Muslims’ socio-economic marginalization since the Sachar Committee submitted its report in 2006. The relative position of Muslims vis-à-vis other social groups in most of the socio-economic indicators, that is income, education, and jobs, has worsened since then.

Even in those states where Muslims were placed slightly above Dalits in these indicators, they have lost their position. While this marginalization preceded Narendra Modi’s ascendancy to power in 2014, the political decline of Muslims and policy interventions in the post-2014 period have further relegated them to the margin. We demonstrate that Muslims’ decline in politics and institutions not only correlates with their socio-economic and educational decline but also reflects multifaceted forms of discrimination against them in contemporary India.
