ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered one of the most disruptive technologies that have transformed the ways businesses operate. AI-based solutions in various areas including marketing trigger lots of discussions, debates, and speculation. Marketers are somehow hesitant but at the same time eager to take advantage of this latest technological advancement. Considering the growing interest in AI among marketing researchers and practitioners, this chapter provides an overview of AI evolution and provides readers with a basic understanding of what is AI and what is not, and how AI systems are designed and developed for specific purposes. This chapter consists of a necessary foundation for readers before exploring the types of AI (Chapter 3) and applications of AI in marketing (Chapter 4).
