ABSTRACT

As the next generation of queer youth turn to social media for education and community, it is important to explore the role of TikTok as a resource and space for these youth. TikTok allows LGBTQ+ users to find educational materials, entertainment, and each other in ways not easily available from more traditional sources. However, the algorithm makes TikTok a unique, and often tricky, space to form community. The most popular trans creators succeed on the app by appealing to cis and straight users and by subverting or responding effectively to transphobia. This chapter examines how trans creators utilize TikTok and engage with their audiences, arguing that TikTok facilitates the creation of trans related content but not necessarily trans community.
