ABSTRACT

Chelyabinsk Oblast is situated in the Southern Urals, with much of the region lying on the eastern slopes of the Southern Ural Mountains. Orenburg Oblast lies to the south, the Republic of Bashkortostan to the west, Sverdlovsk Oblast to the north and Kurgan Oblast to the east. On 19 March 2019 Dubrovskii resigned as Governor. Putin appointed Aleksei Teksler, hitherto the federal First Deputy Minister of Energy, as Acting Governor. The Oblast’s agriculture consists mainly of animal husbandry, horticulture and the production of grain. Kurgan Oblast is situated in the south of the Western Siberian Plain. Chelyabinsk Oblast lies to the west, Sverdlovsk Oblast to the north and Tyumen Oblast to the northeast, and there is an international border with Kazakhstan to the south. Yekaterinburg city was founded in 1821 as a military stronghold and trading centre.
