ABSTRACT

The big technology companies (such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Twitter and many others) pour funds into keeping you attached and even addicted to their devices and software. They collect and sell your data and use that data to influence what you think and purchase. In 2021, Americans will spend an average of 6 hours and 43 minutes online each day—about 100 days of the year. Yet, many people say social media has a negative effect and that their phones control their lives. We need to become more aware of how this affects our relationships and our mental health and to take charge of our devices and software, not the other way around. This chapter is about your digital wellness, it contains wellness ideas that have worked across different industries to put you in control of your smartphone, your apps and upgrade your digital professionalism where required. It explores the ways of thinking about your digital wellness, the psychology, personal processes and communications as well as how to establish your digital brand and maintaining digital security at both work and home.
