ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the vastly underexplored topic of moral injury and photojournalism. Author Lauren Walsh contributes to the field by offering short yet descriptive case studies that allow for individuals’ experiences and first-person perspectives in the deliberation of moral injury. In giving emphasis to the experiences of photojournalists, the chapter highlights demands they face and raises questions around their risk of moral injury. Ultimately, Walsh offers ideas for steps to better understand and mitigate the pain and disruption of severe emotional injury—both within the photojournalism community and, in the end, in a broader journalistic ecosystem.
