ABSTRACT

Care in museums is not a new concept. For many years, museums have talked about “collections care” when it comes to the preservation, conservation, and management of museum objects. Buse et al. expand our notions of “materialities of care” to three interlocking strands, which include spatialities of care, temporalities of care, and practices of care. Contemporary use of empathy involves the capacity to share other people's feelings, to take on others’ perspectives and resonate with how they feel. Museums are uniquely positioned to spark empathy. Self-care is a broad concept that refers to individual responsibility for promoting a healthy lifestyle required for optimal functioning. It involves both the ability to care for oneself and doing the activities necessary to achieve, maintain, or promote optimal health. In a healthy person, self-care is aimed at maintaining physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being.
