ABSTRACT

Delight involves an emotional (joy) response to something unexpected (surprise), involving (playful) behavior, which potentially furthers engagement, wonder, and connection. This joyful surprise might be whimsical, amusing, or lighthearted, allowing a person to wander outside their ordinary life or to open up through humor and laughter. In the museum setting, delight has an important role to play, balancing enjoyment and belonging with serious and sometimes sober content that together can foster a sense of wonder and desire for action. At work, delight can create openings, spark collaboration, stimulate creativity of teams, and provide flexibility and acceptance. One way of fostering delight in the organization is through workplace fun. Fun is a multilayered concept associated with pleasure, comfortableness, informality, curiosity, and sometimes play. Workplace fun can be developed as part of a human resources strategy, as a managerial intervention, can be guided by staff, or be a part of the surrounding social context.
