ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the relationship between the development of school health education and training in one country, The Netherlands. Health education can be conceived as a sub-system of health and of education systems in a society. The Dutch school health service very often neglected educational opportunities and restricted itself to screening disabilities. In dental health a tradition of an integrated approach to service and education exists. Mental health education was involved mainly with sex and alcohol/drugs education. Until 1980 no specialist preparation for health education was available. Some universities had a special interest in health education because it bordered their main field. Until then most so-called health education specialists had received only preparation in the social sciences; a few health educators were medical doctors who entered this field. The Hogere School voor Gezondheidszorg in Utrecht is a school of public health, involved in the training of nurses and doctors.
