ABSTRACT

The pandemic’s socio-economic impact will most likely increase social inequalities and poverty but the effect will vary from region to region. The less-developed areas like the Northeastern region of India are expected to suffer more than others. The emphasis of this chapter is to understand the impact on affected sectors of the Northeast economy such as government finance, banking sector, and labour market. Traditionally, Northeast India suffers from a lack of manufacturing industries, but it has experienced a significant rise in service sectors in the recent past. It is evident from the current data that the service sector is most affected, followed by agriculture. This pandemic has affected the service sector and service-related economic activities due to sudden lockdown of many sectors like healthcare, bank, and hotel.
