ABSTRACT

Roma women are being a catalyst for change among the European Roma, education being one of the main fields of action. In the last decades, the turn from ethnocentric and relativist approaches to a transformative approach in scientific research has allowed us to capture and better understand this trend, showing how Roma women are using their agentic capacity to create social opportunities for themselves and for their communities. These transformations are not only taking place as isolated and disconnected social realities. They constitute an emerging worldwide trend of collective action within the Roma community with a myriad of impacts in the fields of both Roma feminism and beyond it, in promoting equity in education for all Roma. In this chapter, authors explore some of the implications of the Roma Feminism in the educational sphere. This is done by revising two educational spaces either shaped by Roma women or in which they are playing a central role. These are the Roma Women Students Gatherings, led by the Roma Association of Women Drom Kotar Mestipen; and the project of Schools as Learning Communities. Authors deepen on how these spaces constitute an example of collective action that is having an impact on enhancing Roma children’s educational success, from early childhood education to the university, and reflect the implications it has for promoting equity in education.
