ABSTRACT

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia remain key political and security stakeholders in their respective regional environs of South Asia and the Middle East. Both countries have attained a leading stature in the entire Muslim world. Sitting at critical geopolitical flashpoints, both countries have had a large impact on the political, economic and security climate of the two regions. Over time, the bilateral relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional engagement that has not only translated into an aligned foreign policy outlook but also resulted in collaboration in security and economics. This has essentially meant that the Saudi corridors of power have built formidable connections with the political and non-political power brokers in Pakistan. The current trajectory of Pak-Saudi ties remains positive but structural issues that have been drifting apart both sides are very much still there. Evolving regional security picture has been impacting upon both sides respective strategic outlooks and the ever-increasing strategic divergence is posing the most significant challenge to the functionality of the bilateral ties.
