ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the way English UC, the Language Center at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), quickly and effectively embraced the changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and turned the face-to-face approach into emergency remote teaching (ERT) for all its classes, including a series of writing workshops entitled “Writing a Research Article in the STEM Disciplines”, which offer a student-centered experience and provide participants with the necessary strategies and practice to strengthen their writing skills. To meet the objectives, several adjustments had to be made, which have affected the instructor-student interactions and the class pace that must fit this new way of teaching. Outcomes described in this chapter include a positive perception of the workshops’ adaptations, greater flexibility in terms of academic expectations, and the sense of ubiquity that working online can lead to. The lessons learned support the idea that these workshops could continue being held remotely without affecting the quality of the information delivered or the participants’ level of commitment. Additionally, it seems imperative to incorporate assignments that assess higher order cognitive skills and encourage virtual collaboration among academic communities worldwide.
