ABSTRACT

Within the overarching category of source-based writing, synthesis writing represents a particularly difficult skill for second language (L2) students. Building on a previous pedagogical publication describing a paraphrasing and summary writing unit, the current chapter focuses on the next unit of the writing course, in which synthesis writing is introduced and advanced. Having taught and refined this L2 source-based writing course over a combined 16 sections, the authors begin by situating this synthesis writing unit within the larger curriculum before describing the first three classes of the unit. These three teaching sessions are described in detail, including reading and writing activities sequenced to promote student learning. The chapter concludes with a list of five practical tips for successful synthesis writing instruction.
